Mentorship & Sponsorship—What’s the Big Deal?

Mentorship and sponsorship play a HUGE role in creating equitable workplaces.

Mentorship:

Mentors provide guidance and support, share their insights and experiences, and help to empower their mentees to reach their full potential. Mentorship also fosters inclusivity, bridges gaps, and helps diverse voices be heard and flourish.

Sponsorship:

Sponsors actively advocate for the advancement of their mentee. Their influence can open doors and create opportunities. Sponsorship is a catalyst for breaking down barriers, ensuring talent is recognized and rewarded based on merit, not bias.


Why This Matters

  1. Diverse Perspectives: Encouraging diverse perspectives is a great first step in increasing diversity in decision-making positions, which ultimately leads to higher levels of innovation.
  2. Retention & Engagement: Employees who feel valued are more likely to stay with the company and do better work. Having access to mentors and sponsors creates a space for that.
