10 Ways to Implement Legendary Workplace Culture

Creating legendary workplaces doesn’t just happen overnight; it’s a deliberate effort that starts with nurturing the right culture. In our last post, we talked about the difference between ordinary and legendary workplaces. We mentioned that moving into the legendary space means putting arbitrary practices aside, listening to employees, and allowing equity and inclusion be the backbone of the organization (because the research say diversity means innovation, innovation means money, and money means a successful business). As promised, here are some more tips based on those three principles which can help build a workplace that thrives on excellence, equity, and inclusion:

  1. Lead by example. Demonstrate your commitment to creating a culture of excellence with your decisions and your follow-through. Remember, leaders set the tone for the entire organization.
  2. Diverse Hiring. Embrace diversity at every single level of your organization. This means seeking out talent from various backgrounds, cultures, and experiences to foster innovation.
  3. Inclusive Policies. Develop and communicate policies that help all employees to feel like they’re part of a team that sees them and values what they bring to the table.
  4. Education and Training. Regularly provide diversity and inclusion training. People don’t know what they don’t know, and providing ways for them to understand bias and prejudice is a great way to foster ally ship and inclusion.
  5. Open Communication. Create the kind of environment where employees feel safe sharing their thoughts and opinions. Once you create it, foster it. Knowing where they stand will help you in your efforts to make the workplace a better one.
  6. Feedback Culture. Implement a culture that is feedback-driven and allows employees to make suggestions for improvement. They’re in the thick of it, everyday—they probably have a good idea of what is needed.
  7. Mentorship and Sponsorship. Establish mentorship programs and create incentives for employees to participate in them.
  8. Work-Life Balance. Operate as if your employees’ lives revolve around what they do when they go home. Encourage them to take the time they need to maintain a semblance of balance. This may seem counterproductive, but we can promise that employees work harder and enjoy what they do much more when they’re rested.
  9. Recognition and Rewards. Look for opportunities to recognize diversity and inclusion wins and efforts. Creating positivity around these efforts is a great way to keep the ball rolling.
  10. Regular Assessments and goal setting. Always be on the lookout for whether your organization is making progress.

One thing about equity and inclusion space is that there is ALWAYS room for improvement. With that in mind, remember, a legendary workplace isn’t about perfection, but continuous improvement. Cultivating a culture of excellence, equity, and inclusion is something that takes time and commitment from everyone in the organization. It starts from the top down. If we work together, we can create workplaces where everyone feels valued, respected, and empowered to do their best.
